There’s no denying that Brisbane makes an excellent destination for winter sun - particularly for Melburnian’s looking to replenish the vitamin D levels and remember that there is, in fact, actual skin to be found beneath the multiple layers of black.
Positioned amongst the gradients of Spring Hill is one of Brisbane’s newest boutique hotels providing a sunny reminder of the rays. The Johnson launched in September last year in suave style as Queensland’s first addition to the Art Series collection of hotels. Unlike its moody Melbourne counterparts, however, The Johnson is a little more on the demure and understated side.
In case it hadn’t twigged already, the design inspiration behind this Art Series number is Australian abstract artist, Michael Johnson. His colourful works feature in every room and throughout the hotel, suitably framed by a décor of earthy, neutral tones and textures that communicate minimalist, modernist sophistication.
As with many hotels that also play home to residential tenants, the rooms are spacious, practical and liveable, but the playful side is not lost here. From fully equipped kitchenettes with coffee-pod machines to your own micro library of art books, creative amenities and clever additions like swimming goggles in your treat-filled mini bar, The Johnson is as convenient as it is fun.
The Studio Suites and Deluxe Suites are similar in size and nature but you pay a little extra with the deluxe for a balcony and the chance to be higher and overlooking classic Brisbane, rather than the road or car park. I felt it was worth the additional investment, if just to sit back and take it all in from the terrace with a nice glass of wine.
Outside, splash into the award-winning MK50 – a 50 meter lap pool designed by Michael Klim and awarded the Best Pool in 2017 by Gourmet Traveller. After a dip, hangout on sun lounges and ease into cool, padded booths to sip the afternoon away.
You’ll also find a fully equipped gym on site, inspiring meeting rooms and conference facilities, WIFI, in-room robes, pool towels, plus the very cool onsite bar and restaurant, Tumbling Stone.
Staycation or vacation, The Johnson provides a stylish, sunny and colourful escape to lift the mood and say goodbye to the winter blues.
